Outdoor events in South Africa are spectacular, thanks to our beautiful weather. However, hosting entertainment outdoors presents a unique set of challenges that differ wildly from indoor venues. Here is what you need to know.
1. Power Supply is King
Never assume there is a plug point nearby. For outdoor stages, you often need generators. Ensure they are stabilized (to protect sensitive audio equipment) and silent (so the hum doesn't ruin the acoustic set).
2. Weather Protection
Even on a sunny day, equipment needs protection. Direct sunlight can overheat amplifiers and mixers, causing them to shut down. Wind can topple speakers and mic stands. Always have a covered stage or marquee for the band, and have a "Plan B" for sudden rain.
3. Sound Dispersion
Sound dissipates quickly outdoors because there are no walls to reflect it. You generally need a more powerful sound system (PA) outdoors than you would for the same number of people indoors. You also need to consider wind direction, which can carry sound away from the audience.
4. Lighting for Day vs. Night
Standard stage lighting is invisible in direct sunlight. If your event transitions from day to night, your lighting design needs to accommodate both. LED screens are better for daytime visuals than projectors.
5. Access and Terrain
Can the band get their gear to the stage? If the "stage" is in the middle of a vineyard or on a beach, rolling heavy flight cases might be impossible. You may need extra crew to hand-carry equipment or specialized transport.
Don't let logistics dampen the mood. TMA Entertainment has extensive experience in managing outdoor productions, ensuring the show goes on, rain or shine.
